CHAPTER TEN


James fished out the items in the secret compartment and was utterly disappointed. It was those daily items they see everyday. A notebook, a pen, a packet of NERDS and a pack of plasters. Just when James was feeling disappointed, his phone rang. It showed an unknown number.


"Hello, This is James."


"Hello James. This is Professor Dare from the PSI science unit."


"Oh, may I know the reason you are calling?"


"Nothing much. Just realised you have touched the secret compartment of the bag. I've placed a sensor there to inform me if anyone touched it."


"..."


"Anyway, I bet you are disappointed about the items you found in there, right ?"


"... How did you know?"


"I had learned some voice psychology too."


"And..." Suddenly James' face lit up. "Don't tell me you called to tell me those are gadgets!"


"Alright, then I shall not tell you."


"Ah? No. No. No! That's not what i meant!!"


"Haha. I understand. Alright, i have little time with you. Now, touch the pen you fished out from the compartment."


"Yes."


"There are several grooves at the handle of the pen, right? Now remember carefully, this pen is an anesthetic. The first groove, when pressed, will release a small amount of anesthetic that can numb a part of the person for 5 minutes. The second groove could numb the person's movement for 5 minutes and the last groove is so powerful it could numb a person up to 5 hours. Point the tip of the pen towards the person that you would like to numb, press the groove and TA-DA!"


James caressed the pen softly in his hand. He touched the three grooves softly. He placed it down and picked up the notebook.


" How about the notebook?"


"I'm coming to that. The notebook is a prototype but it could work all the same. The pages of the notebook is fireproof."


"Cool! How about the NERDS then?"


"The watermelon flavor is a small explosive. However it must be activated with water or maybe if you want, saliva. You could place it in the small hole of the door knob and pour water over it. In 30 seconds time, the seeds would explode. The more seeds you place, the more explosive power it has."


"Then how about the strawberry flavor?"


"It is merely for your entertainment. It's for you to eat!"


"Oh."


"The plasters are for yourself."


"What do you mean?"


"These plasters are coated with a special formula we have created to treat injuries. It quickens the cell movement and heals the injuries faster. In the formula, SE589, we included a small amount of anesthetic to lessen the pain you might be getting due to your chronic disease."


"Thank you."


From the background, someone shouted, "PROF DARE! THE PLANT EXPLODED!"


"Oh, I need to get going. Is there any questions you might want to ask?"


"Why am I not given a gun?"


"Ah, you are a minor. In Singapore, it is not legal to carry a gun unless you are from the special forces."


"Well, I am from the PSI."


"So you would like to go and get yourself identified?"


"..."


"Alright, anymore questions ?"


"No. No, sir"


"Haha , there's no need for the sir, kiddo. I hope to see you back in one piece. Oh and..."


"What?"


"Don't swallow the watermelon flavored NERDS."


"Yes, I know."


"Alright, have a nice day."


Prof Dare hung up. James stared the items laid out in front of him. A fireproof notebook, an anesthetic pen, an explosive NERDS seeds and some healing plasters. Oh, how fun is that supposed to be...


"James! Are you asleep?"


Time to sleep... , James thought. He kept all the items back into his backpack but kept the pen and a few plasters in his pocket. He laid on the mattress and slept.
